Buying a used DTF printer
By the Buckets of Ink equipment team · Updated October 1, 2026 · Tempe, Arizona
Direct-to-film (DTF) printers can produce full-color transfers with very little setup, and used systems come up for sale as shops upgrade. The printhead is the most expensive wear part, so most of your inspection is about the heads and the ink system.
Printheads and the nozzle check
- Ask for a nozzle check printed the same day, with no missing lines on any color, including white.
- Ask which printheads it uses, how many, and roughly how old they are.
- Ask whether a spare printhead comes with it.
White ink and maintenance
White ink settles. Machines with white ink circulation are easier to keep healthy, but every DTF printer needs regular maintenance.
- Check the white ink circulation or stirring system runs.
- Look at the capping station and wiper: worn parts here cause clogs.
- Ask how the printer was stored if it hasn't been running, and whether it was flushed.
Film feed, shaker and curing
- Run film through and check it feeds straight without skewing.
- Check the powder shaker coats evenly and the dryer cures fully.
- Ask about fume extraction or filtration and include it if you can.
- Confirm the print width (for example 13, 24 or 30 inch) matches your work.
RIP software
The RIP software drives color and white underbase. Ask which RIP it uses and whether the licence transfers to you. A printer without a working RIP licence can cost more to get running than expected.
Before you pay for any used machine
- See it run under load, not just power on. Ask the seller for a video of a real job if you can't visit.
- Ask for age, hours or print/stitch count, and any service records or receipts for replaced parts.
- Confirm parts and service are still available for that model.
- Check the power it needs (voltage, phase, amps) against what your shop has, and price any electrical work.
- Plan rigging, crating and freight before you buy. Heavy machines may need a forklift or liftgate at both ends.
- Pay through escrow so the money is only released after you've inspected the machine.
