Buying a used DTG printer

By the Buckets of Ink equipment team · Updated October 1, 2026 · Tempe, Arizona

Direct-to-garment printers print straight onto shirts and are popular for short runs. Like DTF, the printheads and ink system decide whether a used DTG printer is a bargain.

Heads, ink and print count

  • Ask for a same-day nozzle check, including white.
  • Ask for the print count and the maintenance log.
  • Check whether it prints CMYK only or CMYK plus white.

Platens, pretreat and curing

  • List the platens included: standard, youth, sleeve and hoodie platens all matter.
  • Pretreat is part of the process: ask whether a pretreat machine is included and check it sprays evenly.
  • Check the heat press or dryer used to cure prints reaches and holds temperature.

Storage and support

DTG printers don't like sitting idle. Ask how long it has been since the last print and how it was maintained. Check that parts and service are still available for the model.

Before you pay for any used machine

  • See it run under load, not just power on. Ask the seller for a video of a real job if you can't visit.
  • Ask for age, hours or print/stitch count, and any service records or receipts for replaced parts.
  • Confirm parts and service are still available for that model.
  • Check the power it needs (voltage, phase, amps) against what your shop has, and price any electrical work.
  • Plan rigging, crating and freight before you buy. Heavy machines may need a forklift or liftgate at both ends.
  • Pay through escrow so the money is only released after you've inspected the machine.
