Buying a used heat press

By the Buckets of Ink equipment team · Updated October 1, 2026 · Tempe, Arizona

Heat presses are simple machines, which makes them good used buys. Even heat and even pressure decide whether your transfers last.

Heat and pressure

  • Check the platen temperature in the centre and the corners with a heat gun or temperature strips.
  • Check pressure is even across the platen with a sheet of paper test.
  • Make sure the controller reaches, holds and displays temperature and time correctly.
  • On pneumatic presses, ask what compressor it needs and listen for air leaks.

Platens and extras

  • List the platens included and whether they are interchangeable.
  • Check the Teflon cover or sheet and the lower pad for burns or flattening.
  • Ask about stands or caddies, which make a big difference on the shop floor.

Before you pay for any used machine

  • See it run under load, not just power on. Ask the seller for a video of a real job if you can't visit.
  • Ask for age, hours or print/stitch count, and any service records or receipts for replaced parts.
  • Confirm parts and service are still available for that model.
  • Check the power it needs (voltage, phase, amps) against what your shop has, and price any electrical work.
  • Plan rigging, crating and freight before you buy. Heavy machines may need a forklift or liftgate at both ends.
  • Pay through escrow so the money is only released after you've inspected the machine.
