Buying used wide-format, print-and-cut and vinyl equipment
By the Buckets of Ink equipment team · Updated October 1, 2026 · Tempe, Arizona
Wide-format printers, print-and-cut machines and vinyl cutters are the backbone of sign and decal work. Heads, media handling and cutting accuracy are where to focus.
Printers
- Ask for a same-day nozzle check and the ink configuration.
- Run media through and check it feeds straight; check the take-up reel works.
- Ask which RIP software comes with it and whether the licence transfers.
Cutters and print-and-cut
- Cut a test file and check the contour cut lines up with the print.
- Check the optical eye registration if it has one.
- Ask for spare blades and the cutting software.
Laminators
- Check rollers for nicks and even pressure, and whether it is cold, hot or heat-assist.
Before you pay for any used machine
- See it run under load, not just power on. Ask the seller for a video of a real job if you can't visit.
- Ask for age, hours or print/stitch count, and any service records or receipts for replaced parts.
- Confirm parts and service are still available for that model.
- Check the power it needs (voltage, phase, amps) against what your shop has, and price any electrical work.
- Plan rigging, crating and freight before you buy. Heavy machines may need a forklift or liftgate at both ends.
- Pay through escrow so the money is only released after you've inspected the machine.
